RSV season arriving in California

The NREVSS (CDC) data above reflect an increase in the percent of positive results for samples submitted for RSV testing during the last week of November to more than 10%. Thus, the RSV season has arrived in the state of California as a whole. Among the Sutter affiliates of the Sacramento region we have yet to see a similar increase. There have been sporadic cases and the percent positive has decreased due to a larger denominator - people are testing more. The data are reflected in the chart below. We will continue to update as the season progresses.

RSV season comes to a close

The RSV activity in our region and for the state of California decreased steadily during the second half of April and the first week in May, as reflected by the data collected via the Sutter affiliates feeding into the NREVSS data for the state of California (chart below). At this point we will stop regular update of this blog and plan to resume posting this fall. Special thanks to Lise Bashe, CLS, MT(ASCP), Ambulatory Microbiology Laboratory Supervisor Sutter Medical Foundation, for the steady supply of data through the season -- Thanks Lise!

RSV activity is lower but persistent

Data from our Sutter affiliates have shown a gradual but steady decrease in the number of RSV positive samples submitted for the region. RSV activity is still significant with >10% of specimens remaining positive. Our data parallel the NREVSS data for the state of California depicted in the graph below. Based on these data, we plan to continue prophylaxis against RSV during the remainder of the month of April.

RSV activity decreasing, not gone yet

The RSV activity in our area has decreased, with the samples submitted still showing more than 10% positivity. The NREVSS graph below shows a decrease in the number of respiratory samples submitted, still with >10% positives.

RSV activity keeps going in our region

After an apparently decreasing trend as of last posting, the samples positive for RSV in the Sutter affiliates labs of our region have increased again for two consecutive weeks, while the activity in the state as a whole has remained somewhat constant with a trend toward decline (NREVSS chart below). We plan to continue RSV specific prophylaxis for the remainder of March and will decide on April based on the data that will become available over the next 2-3 weeks.

RSV activity steadily down

We have seen a steady decline in RSV activity for the last two weeks, now approaching the 10% positives mark. The picture for California as a whole is similar, with a steady decline in the number of specimens positive for RSV. The small blip in the percent of positives for the NREVSS chart below may be due to a decrease in the total number of specimens submitted - lower denominator.

RSV activity beginning to decrease in state and region

We are beginning to see a decrease in RSV activity in our region, as reflected by a decrease in samples positive to RSV of the ones submitted to Sutter affiliates. The RSV activity for the whole state is also decreasing as per the NREVSS data shown below. It seems our region is about one to two weeks behind the state in the decline of RSV activity.

RSV activity continues in our region

RSV activity continues in our area with a fairly steady number of cases per week over the last 4 weeks, while the state as a whole is beginning to see a decease in the number of cases. Will continue to keep you posted.

Update on data through Feb 2, 2008

This is only a quick update on data from early last week. The NREVSS chart remains the same as of 2/10/08.

RSV season in full swing

We are still seeing an increase in the numbers of respiratory samples positive to RSV. The variation in the percent positive value is due to the changing denominator. Data from the National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) below reflect a similar trend for the state of California as a whole.

RSV season in bloom

The current RSV season is in full swing and we may be reaching the cusp as reflected by our data and the California NREVSS data below. Keep encouraging good hand washing!!

RSV activity still on the rise

The number of samples positive to RSV continues to rise. On the week ending on January 5 we had 14 specimens submitted, six positive to RSV. Sutter Memorial and Sutter Roseville Hospitals each had two positives, with the rest coming from Auburn Faith and Sutter General Hospitals.
The graph below shows the RSV activity for the state. You can find this info by following our CDC RSV link on this page.

Steady increase in RSV activity for the area

We are seeing a steady increase in the number of positive samples for RSV. Out of twenty three samples submitted at Sutter facilities there were five positives, one at Sutter Memorial, one at Sutter Roseville and three at Sutter Davis. The overall percent of positives for our area was 22%. Meanwhile, the RSV activity for the state is rising, with an overall percent of positive samples at about 23-24%.
